Past Continuos Tense
Past Continuous Tense adalah bentuk tense yang digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kegiatan atau peristiwa yang sedang berlangsung pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau. Tense ini menunjukkan bahwa suatu aktivitas sedang terjadi ketika aktivitas lain terjadi atau pada waktu tertentu di masa lalu.
Perhatikan contoh berikut:
- I was studying at 8 p.m. last night.
- She was reading a book when her friend called her.
- They were playing football yesterday afternoon.
Pada kalimat-kalimat tersebut, kegiatan sedang berlangsung di masa lalu.
Fungsi Past Continuous Tense
1. Menyatakan Kegiatan yang Sedang Berlangsung pada Waktu Tertentu di Masa Lalu
Contoh:
- I was doing my homework at 7 p.m. yesterday.
- She was cooking dinner at six o’clock.
Artinya kegiatan tersebut sedang berlangsung pada waktu yang disebutkan.
2. Menyatakan Dua Kegiatan yang Terjadi Bersamaan di Masa Lalu
Contoh:
- While I was studying, my brother was watching television.
- They were singing while we were dancing.
3. Menyatakan Kegiatan yang Sedang Berlangsung Ketika Kegiatan Lain Terjadi
Biasanya menggunakan kata when atau while.
Contoh:
- I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- She was reading when her mother came home.

Contoh:

Bentuk singkat:
- wasn’t = was not
- weren’t = were not
Contoh:
- He wasn’t studying.
